A discharge lamp, often referred to as a gas discharge tube or lamp, is a light source that produces lighting using two electrodes (anode and cathode) by means of an electrical discharge in gases or metal vapours. When switched on, the light output is initially low, but quickly achieves its maximum value when the lamp reaches its operating temperature. A general distinction is made between low-pressure discharge lamps (fluorescent lamps), high-pressure discharge lamps (metal halide lamps) and ultra-high-pressure lamps (xenon lamps). Our examples are exclusively high-pressure lamps which, because of their extreme brightness, are not intended for use as room lighting in homes but primarily for specialised lighting applications.

The right type of discharge lamp for different applications

In order to be able to decide which discharge lamp is actually suitable for the desired purpose, we have compiled a brief overview below of the various types of discharge lamps for you, which differ in the gas or vapour mixes used:

– Mercury vapour lamps – the name says it all – are used for street and outdoor lighting in the commercial and industrial sectors, but are also occasionally used in theatre and event equipment, as well as at trade fairs.

– Sodium vapour lamps are also mainly intended for outdoor lighting. In terms of light output and service life, they are the leaders among high-pressure lamps and are therefore very popular for illuminating historical architecture.

– As a further development of the mercury vapour lamp, the metal halide lamp can illuminate entire stadiums and large industrial halls. This is due to the addition of halogen compounds of various metals, which significantly increase the light output.

This is how a discharge lamp benefits from the integrated ballast unit

A discharge lamp should be used only with an electronic ballast unit, which is conveniently integrated into the lamp itself. The advantage: it limits the current flowing through the lamp, preventing it from being damaged. The ballast unit also ensures flicker-free light, makes dimming possible, and automatically switches off defective lamps.
